"They say a lady should always have some secrets, layers which she allows to be peeled away only by the intimate few, a striptease that goes beyond the physical... The hard part is when the layers of your mind are stripped away also, until the very core of your being is exposed. And if the very essence of who you are is taken away too, what are you left with? Nothing."

Based on true events, David Cullen tells the story of Carly, a woman who thought she had met The One to take her to heaven - and found herself in the depravity of hell itself.

SHE THOUGHT HE WAS THE LOVE OF HER LIFE. HE THOUGHT HE WAS THE END OF IT

I could not put this story down from the moment I started reading it. It took me about 6 hours over a 2-day span to read the whole thing so it's quite short but every page is a creepy thrill. There are reviewers who gave this a 1-star because they didn't want to know about the subject matter. As sad as it is, even though this is not a "true" story, this type of thing does happen every single day and the fact that some readers find the content disturbing and don't wish to think about it makes me sad for this world's children who may be reaching out to someone for help. Don't turn a blind eye and say "they are exaggerating".
Read this book...it is creepy and suspenseful in it's own right, but it will also make you think...

Knock On My Door eBook David Cullen Reviews

A truly chilling story of deceit and treachery on the human psyche. Carly was so brave and strong to continue to tell her story until someone believed her. Evil lurks at every corner around the world and when you think you know someone the truth becomes reality. This book keeps you turning the pages because it is so chilling but real. David keeps you on the edge of the cliff. Read it.
Wow, is all I can think of to describe this book. At first it was kind of so-so, but then all of a sudden you see where this book is headed and all I can say is I couldn't put the book down! I would have to venture to say this had to be one of the best books I have ever read once I got into it. Some people have said they don't believe this is true, all I have to say is whether it's true or not, it is incredible and you are just left at the end thinking Wow!
I started reading this book on the train to Grand Central (ironically). While I thought that the story was interesting, and definitely a good read for the price, I too had a problem with the language. I don't know anyone here in the US who calls the hood of a car a "bonnet." Just one of the many examples. This was supposed to be a woman who spent most of her life in the northeast. Just not the way we speak (even in Boston LOL). There were also dramatic buildups that just went flat. Such as when she ventured into her basement and "screamed and screamed" at what she saw. Those of you who have read the book know that the items that found wouldn't make anyone "scream and scream." Just kind of silly.
Nothing extraordinary about this book. What really bugged me about it a) it is written by a man in a woman's voice and it is evident; b) according to the book, the main character was born in Sausalito, California but the character too often uses British lingo, which I found irritating; c) a long read and then very near the end the story twists and turns and dumps you off at "The End"...
As another reviewer said, "this book is weird." Somehow it got categorized as "true crime," which it is not. The writing/editing was not bad (with a few exceptions, e.g., "affect"-for-"effect" and "infer"-for-"imply"). The story-line was engrossing. There were disconcerting elements it was set in NYC, narrated by an American woman, yet it was filled with British-isms that no American would use. (And the author several times had a character say how much she/he loved a British accent. Cute.) The author is obviously a male who had the narrator acting and doing things a male would like a heroine to do. It would make an especially bizarre Lifetime movie script.
I literally sat and read this book in one evening.... I could not go to sleep until I was finished, because I could not imagine where the story would go next. I get the reviews about the British English because at times,it was coming from Carly, who was supposed to be American - it just made me wonder if Carly was actually British. However, it wasn't a problem as it seemed to be for another reviewer. I can't even imagine living Carly's life, but I can sure tell you that I would have been out of there long before she was - I would have been convinced I was going to die if I stayed (I knew she didn't only because she was telling the story....). Great book, disburbing story about how depraved so many people who walk among us really are (and they look so normal). I got a glimpse of life that I'm blessed to never have to be exposed to or suffer through. Truly fascinating. Best dollar I've ever spent!!
This book held my interest because it was a good read, and well worth the price of a dollar; so even if some things disappointed I can't complain too much due to the price.

The disappointing part is that this is a work of fiction not a true memoir. It is supposedly "based on" real events but if it is, I'm sure it's based very loosely. It should be made more clear that this is fiction.

Ok, so the author writes a good tale. He kept me reading, so I give him the thumbs up for that. However, he does not do a convincing woman. If I began to list the reasons why the narrator did not behave as a woman would this review would be too long and have too many spoilers in it. I have a couple of male friends who use female personas in the virtual world, and the author is like one of these as he tries, and fails, to write as a real woman. His female character has an interesting "voice" and I liked her, but at no point did I ever feel I was reading anything but a man making a poor attempt to pass himself off as female.

Some of the terminology made me raise an eyebrow too. It's supposed to take place in the USA, but the author occasionally uses some British terms for things. (I'm an American in England, so I noticed this.)

Is the book worth buying? Yes. But not if you're expecting true crime or a true memoir. If you're expecting a good fiction read, I say give it a shot.
