David Tobin, a psychiatrist, and Kathryn, his wife, an artist of merit, have perished in a mountain climbing accident. Their closest friend, the writer Jeffrey Stevens, has been asked by their attorney to perform the “discretionary duty” of going to their home and removing personal effects that “would be of no interest” in an estate sale. Jeffrey does this, and as he moves through familiar rooms he knew in happier times, “everything he saw was electric with that part of them not yet dead; everything he touched therefore, or rearranged…[subtracted] from the evidence of their having existed at all. The truth was he had been asked to further annihilate them.”
Through the prism of photographs, letters and journals he discovers, Jeffrey discerns a vibrant life of mind and spirit. There is also a manuscript detailing the sexual adventures of a patient in treatment with David, a woman, Devon Taylor, whom Jeffrey realizes he had dated in high school. Now divorced and living nearby, Jeffrey contacts Devon. They meet and discuss their loss. In the course of a single day each reflects on time and change, the fragile nature of life, the shock of untimely death, and precious memories that will continue to influence the hopeful possibilities remaining as the living moment continues to unfold.

This was a hard book to put down. It contains erudition, penetrating insight into the the human condition, remarkable writing, and abounding sexual complexity and titillation (that puts Fifty Shades of Gray to shame). And it's all wrapped up in a clever and intriguing yarn that bears no resemblance to anything I've read before. An extraordinary read.Product details

Personal Effects edition by Tom Casey Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
PERSONAL EFFECTS marks a shift in Tom Casey's writing. It tells the story of Jeffrey Stevens, a 41 year-old writer whose best friends, David and Kathryn Tobin, have been killed in a mountaineering accident. Jeffrey is charged with a "discretionary duty" to go to their home and remove any personal effects that would be "of no interest" in an estate sale. As he enters, the coffee cup with lipstick in the kitchen sink, a magazine tossed carelessly on the floor in the bedroom, a light switch he turns off, everything he touches or moves further annihilates them from memory. David Tobin was a psychiatrist and Kathryn was an artist. Before Jeffrey's fiancé was killed in a motoring accident, the two couples were close companions. Photographs of their happy times together bring Jeffrey to recognition that he is the sole survivor of great expectations of good life. Through letters, journals and manuscripts he finds in their home, Jeffrey learns of a secret life they had, and that one of David's patients was a girl they both dated in high school. By the end of the day Jeffrey is reunited with that girl, now a divorcee, as together they try to understand the fragile foundations of life and hope.
